Rosie Perez
Rosie Perez (born Rosa Maria Perez on the 6th of September 1964) is an American choreographer, actress, dancer, and activist. Her breakout moment came with Tina's character in Do the Right Thing (1989), then followed by White Men Can't Hop (1992). Perez's portrayal of Tina in Fearless (1993) earned her nominations for the Academy Award, Best Supporting Actress as well as other awards. It Could Happen to You (1994), The Road to El Dorado ((2000), Pineapple Express (2008) and Birds of Prey (2010) are her starring roles in films.
Perez has received three Primetime Emmy Award nominations (in 1990-1994) as well as an Emmy Award nomination for her work as The Flight Attendant (2020-2024). Perez has been in Broadway stage plays such as The Ritz and Frankie, Johnny in the Clair de Lune and Fish in the Dark. She also co-hosted The View's 18th season on ABC's talk show The View.
Early life
Perez was born on September 6 1964, in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City She was the daughter of Lydia Perez and Ismael Serrano who was a seaman in the merchant marine. [3][4][5] Her mother Lydia (nee Fontanez y Reyes) was born on 13 October 1939, in Humacao, Puerto Rico. Her father came born in Aguadilla in Puerto Rico. Her mother was engaged to a man that was 20 years her senior, Arturo Perez. After an affair with Serrano her mother had already five children. Perez was born at the closed Greenpoint Hospital in Brooklyn's Greenpoint neighborhood.
Perez is among the ten kids that her mother had. Rosie and her siblings lived in Bushwick in the period when their mother was in prison. Her mother was in jail when she gave birth to her first child. She was fostered by an aunt and then, like her siblings, went through group homes and foster care. Her siblings and she were often separated. She was placed in the group foster home and was in foster homes throughout New York and Peekskill up until the age of eight. The state of New York considered her as a ward of the State of New York from age 12 up to age 12. Her aunt and her mother visited her often, and her father had a few times tried to take her custody.
